Coin, ring and Bible bearers: roles, ages and boy or girl

What the ring, coin and Bible bearers do at a Filipino wedding, whether a boy or girl can carry each, good ages, how many you need and where they walk.

The wedding bearers are the children (sometimes adults) who carry the ceremony's symbols down the aisle. A Filipino wedding usually has three: the ring bearer carries the rings on a pillow, the coin bearer carries the arras (traditionally 13 coins), and the Bible bearer carries the Bible. Boys or girls can do any of them, and most couples pick kids between about four and nine.

Here's what each one does, how to choose them, and how to keep a five-year-old moving down the aisle.

What does each bearer carry?

BearerCarriesWhen it's used
Ring bearerThe rings, often dummies, on a small pillowBlessing and giving of rings, after the vows
Coin bearerThe arras (arrhae), 13 coins in a box or pouchBlessing and giving of the arras, right after the rings
Bible bearerA Bible, sometimes the couple's ownPlaced at the altar or used for the readings

The order of the first two comes from the rite itself. The US bishops' outline of the wedding Mass lists the "Blessing and Giving of the Arras" as an optional step right after the rings, and calls it "a tradition important in Hispanic and Filipino families." The Bible has no fixed moment. Some parishes place it on the altar at the start, others use it for the readings. Ask your church coordinator.

What is the coin bearer, and what do the coins mean?

The coin bearer carries the arras. In most Filipino weddings these are 13 coins, often gold or silver-toned, in a small box or pouch. After the rings, the priest blesses the coins and the groom pours them into the bride's hands, a promise to share what he has and to provide for the home. Some couples now give the coins to each other, to show the promise runs both ways.

Why 13? Families give different answers: one for each month plus one for the poor, or Christ and the twelve apostles. Treat it as custom, not doctrine.

Most couples buy an arras set from a church supply store or a wedding shop, or borrow a family heirloom. Give the box a ribbon or clasp that a child can't open. Thirteen coins rolling under the pews is a memorable photo for the wrong reasons.

Is the coin bearer a boy or a girl?

Either. Most Filipino weddings have used boys for the ring, coin and Bible by habit, with girls as flower girls. Nothing in church or civil law says so. Bride & Breakfast's entourage FAQ says gender rules don't apply to the bearers any more than to the sponsors, and even asks "what's to stop the adults from walking down the aisle with flowers, the arrhae, the bible, and the rings?"

So pick the child who'll do it well. A steady seven-year-old niece beats a nephew who'll cry at the door.

What age should the bearers be?

Sources agree roughly. Nuptials.ph puts bearers and flower girls at three to nine years old. The Budgetarian Bride says some churches want them to be at least five. Ask your parish if it has a rule.

What matters more than the number:

  • Can they walk the whole aisle on their own, without being carried?
  • Can they follow a cue from someone they know?
  • Will they still be awake? A 4 PM ceremony after a long drive is hard on a three-year-old.

Under four, pair them with an older cousin, or have a parent walk beside them. Over ten, kids often feel too old for a pillow. Give them a reading or an offertory gift instead.

How many bearers do you need?

Three is the usual set: ring, coin and Bible. None of them is required, and the law asks only for two adult witnesses (Family Code, Articles 3 and 6).

Couples with many nieces and nephews add roles:

Extra roleWhat they carry
Second ring bearerOne ring each, when two nephews both want the job
Cord or veil bearerThe cord or veil, handed to the secondary sponsors
Candle bearerThe candles, when the parish doesn't supply them
Herald or sign bearerA "Here comes the bride" sign, just before the bride

The herald is a modern add-on, not a tradition, so check the parish allows signs in the aisle. The cord, veil and candle themselves are handled by the secondary sponsors; a bearer only carries them in.

Where do the bearers walk in the processional?

Near the end. In the order most Filipino church coordinators follow, the bearers walk after the secondary sponsors and just before the flower girls, with the bridesmaids, maid of honor and bride still to come. Some parishes put the children first so they can be seated before the adults arrive. Our processional order guide walks through the full sequence.

Once they reach the front, the bearers hand their items over. Usually the rings go to the best man, the coins to the best man or a sponsor, and the Bible to the altar server or a reader. Then a parent or yaya takes them to a reserved pew. Agree on who receives each item before the day.

Real rings or dummy rings?

Dummies, if the ring bearer is under about six. Tie them to the pillow with a ribbon and give the real rings to the best man or maid of honor. Older kids can carry the real ones if the rings are tied on and the coordinator checks the pillow at the church door.

How to get a small child down the aisle

  • Bring them to the rehearsal, in the shoes they'll wear.
  • Put someone they trust at the front pew, where they can see them.
  • Keep the items light. A heavy leather Bible is a lot for a four-year-old; a small one works.
  • Feed them before the ceremony and have a quiet snack ready.
  • Have a backup. Bride & Breakfast suggests an adult on standby in case a bearer refuses to walk, and it happens at most weddings.

If a bearer freezes at the door, let it go. Someone walks them down or carries the item, and the ceremony goes on. Nobody remembers it a week later except in the video, fondly.

What do bearers wear?

Most boy bearers wear a small barong or a white polo with dark trousers. Girl bearers wear a simple white or motif-colour dress, often matching the flower girls. Keep it comfortable: no stiff collars, nothing that needs constant fixing. Our entourage list guide has an attire timeline for the whole party.

How do you list the bearers on the invitation?

Last on the entourage page, after the bridesmaids and groomsmen:

Ring Bearer [Name] · Coin Bearer [Name] · Bible Bearer [Name]
Flower Girls [Name], [Name]

Use first and last names for older kids, or just first names if your family prefers. Some couples add the symbolic line from the program, like "To carry our symbol of faith" for the Bible bearer. Keep the style the same across all three.

Track the little ones without a separate list

The bearers are usually guests too, and their parents need the RSVP, the call time and the seat. On a Ceremo wedding website, Ring Bearer, Coin Bearer, Bible Bearer and Flower Girls are built-in entourage roles you switch on, free on every plan. Each child's role is saved on their guest record, so you can filter your list down to the entourage and see which families haven't answered yet. Ceremo is free for up to 50 guests. Frequently asked questions

What does the coin bearer do at a wedding?

The coin bearer carries the arras (arrhae), traditionally 13 coins in a small box or pouch, down the aisle. During the ceremony the priest blesses the coins right after the rings, and the groom gives them to the bride as a sign that he will share what he has. The bearer usually hands the box to the best man or a sponsor before sitting down.

Is the coin bearer a boy or a girl?

Either. Most Filipino weddings use boys as ring, coin and Bible bearers by habit, but no church or civil rule says so. Bride & Breakfast notes that gender rules do not apply to bearers, and many couples choose a niece or even an adult.

What age should the wedding bearers be?

Most couples pick children between about four and nine. Nuptials.ph puts bearers and flower girls at three to nine years old, and some churches want them to be at least five. Choose a child who can walk the aisle without being carried and follow a cue at rehearsal.

How many bearers are there in a Filipino wedding?

Usually three: one ring bearer, one coin bearer and one Bible bearer. Some couples add a cord or veil bearer, a herald who carries a "Here comes the bride" sign, or a second ring bearer for a pair of nephews. None of them is required.

Does the ring bearer carry the real rings?

Often not. Many couples put dummy rings on the pillow and give the real ones to the best man or maid of honor. If the bearer is very young, that is the safer choice. Agree on it with your coordinator before the rehearsal.
